Resume Joost van der LaanDrs Joost W. van der Laan (1951) provides consulting services, training and lectures, project management and interim management to retailers, retail suppliers and professional service organizations. He has a Science degree from the University of Amsterdamand a Business Administration degree from theUniversity of Rotterdam.

His thesis (1976) was a computer simulation for the Exxon Lube Oil Blending Plant in Rotterdam: “Lubrication of Policy Making

He worked as manager of “Marketing Research & Development” and Loyalty Card at Dutch department store chain “De Bijenkorf”. In 1981 Joost became controller and project manager at Albert Heijn. He developed and managed Albert Heijn’s regional full line distribution center inZwolle.  From 1985 at Vomar Supermarkets, a regional player in the west ofHolland, he was responsible for physical distribution, information technology and store productivity. He developed the “Internal Store Benchmarking™” system for productivity improvement in retail stores.

In 1987 Joost became responsible for physical distribution at Blokker, the largest household merchandise retailer in The Netherlands. In 1989 he became full-time management consultant, first as manager at AT Kearney and later as director of the consultancy division of AC Nielsen. At AT Kearney he was responsible for the development of the Total Quality practice and Logistics Modeling. At Prodis he was responsible for Direct Product Profitability research and space-management systems.

In 1993 he started his company “Retail Economics” (originally: Marketing & Logistics BV). He has completed projects for retailers, manufacturers and logistic service providers in The Netherlands,Germanyand theUK. He was responsible for 37 publications in trade journals and hand books.

From 1995 until 2000 Joost performed high profile work for Van Eerd Food Group and her Jumbo supermarket chain.

Between 2000 and 2005 he was interim Research Director of Erasmus Food Management Institute. Joost currently works on short-term assignments for clients. A new marketing focus area is Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization.
